Dog owners in and around Pretoria are urged to vaccinate their dogs, after the Tshwane SPCA reported an outbreak of “canine distemper” disease.
“Symptoms often take time to manifest and dogs may initially appear healthy, only to become sick later” – Tshwane SPCA
The disease is highly contagious, characterized by inflammation of the mucous membranes, respiratory and digestive organs, with a typical rash and often severe nerve disorders.
According to the Tshwane SPCA there is no cure for the disease. Veterinarians can only provide support if a dog has been diagnosed with the disease. The importance of having your dogs vaccinated cannot be emphasized more.
