Amy’Leigh de Jager

The four kidnappers of six-year-old Amy’Leigh de Jager from Vanderbijlpark were sentenced to lengthy jail terms.

Tharina Human is starting her effective 10-year sentence after she formally confessed to kidnapping the child last year and threatening to extort R2 million from her parents.

Pieter  Van Zyl received an eight-year sentence and Bafokeng Molemohi seven years.

LaetitiaNel received the shortest prison therm of 5 years.

During mitigation of sentencing, Tharina Human’s lawyer David Mey told the court that she was “truly sorry” for the heartache she caused the family and her extended family.

David Mey said that Tharina’s wish was to meet with the parents of her victim but would wait for the right time to do so. According to Mey, the parents have also indicated that they want to have a discussion with her, and she immediately agreed to that request. Mey said they are busy arranging a meeting.

Amy’Leigh’s father, Wynand, said he was happy that the matter was over.

“I am happy that it came to an end so that we can move on with our lives and my daughter can actually start living a normal life as a child and we can start looking forward now to improve her as my daughter and improve her way of living,” he told News24.
