The South African Democratic Teachers Union is urging all its eligible members to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

The health department said that elderly people, people with underlying illnesses and other essential workers such as teachers and police officers would be vaccinated during phase 2 of the government’s vaccination program.

This phase kicked off last Monday, but so far only the elderly are being vaccinated.

However, Sadtu’s secretary-general, Mugwena Maluleke, believes that teachers should be given priority so that schools can remain open and children can still receive education

So far, over 3,500 teachers have died from the Coronavirus countrywide.

Unesco is urging all countries to vaccinate teachers early in their rollout.
