Covid-19 antibody test kits are now available in the country and will be a game-changer in preventing the spread of the coronavirus.
It is important that South Africa ramps up its testing capacity to deal efficiently with the pandemic.
Although the antibody tests cannot indicate immunity to the coronavirus, it is helpful in detecting how far it has spread in the population.
Where can I get tested?
Retail pharmacy company Clicks is offering Covid-19 antibody tests at its clinics nationwide.
Dis-Chem’s drive-through clinic in Waterfall City, Midrand, offers a Covid-19 antibody test.
How does the test work?
The tests look for signs of previous Covid-19 infection and developed antibodies to fight the disease.
It does not require blood to be sent to a laboratory for analysis. Instead, much like an HIV finger-prick test, they can produce a result in 15 minutes and don’t require a visit to a doctor’s office.
How much does it cost?
The antibody test will cost R199 at Clicks and R380 at Dis-Chem’s drive-through clinic.
The test kits are only for healthcare practitioners and not for private home use.
